In research, I use experimental methods to analyze security incidents and analyzing version archives to find and predict vulnerabilities. In my company, I help companies assess, manage, and mitigate risks that come from operating an IT infrastructure. You can also hire me as a freelance security consultant.

Recent Events

2009-08-23:I am starting a list of essays on all things risk and security.
2009-03-14:Our paper on predicting vulnerable packages in Red Hat has been accepted at USENIX '09; acceptance rate: 16.8% (32/191).
2008-06-30: I am now working as a postdoc at the Universita degli Studi di Trento. I am working on a EU project called MASTER, specifically on security and assurance indicators.
2008-03-18: I am working on a new research project, namely whether it is possible to predict trends in security from publicly available security reports. This too is a collaboration with Thomas Zimmermann. Stay tuned.
2008-02-20: I'm working on a new research project, namely the application of techniques from my thesis to the entire RedHat package base. I'm working with someone at RedHat security and first results are promising. This is a collaboration with Thomas Zimmermann. Stay tuned.
2008-02-14: My Erdős Number dropped from 6 to 5 because of the paper “Do Crosscutting Concerns Cause Defects?”, soon to appear in TSE.
2008-02-06: I have successfully defended my PhD thesis with magna cum laude.
2007-11-28: I'm giving a talk at the Praxisnetz Merzig about the dangers of the eHealth Card.
